Summary

The monograph “CONTROVERSIES ABOUT NATIONAL IDENTITY: Bunjevci, Vlachs and Roma in Serbia”, authored by Dr. Nada Raduška, is the result of many years of scientific study of national identity, ethnodemographic development, migration, multiculturalism, interethnic relations, minority rights and political emancipation of members of ethnic communities in Serbia. It was created within the framework of the scientific research activities of the Institute for Political Studies in Belgrade, which is funded by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia.

In the context of contemporary geopolitical changes and integration processes, national minorities strive to preserve their ethnocultural identity, improve their position and protect human and minority rights, moving between the processes of segregation, assimilation and integration. The greatest challenges in this regard are faced by numerically smaller ethnic communities, spatially scattered and without a homeland, who even at the beginning of the 21st century are not fully integrated into society or equally included in socio-cultural, economic and political trends.

The aim of the research is a comprehensive overview of the demographic, ethno-identity and socio-political development of members of the Bunjevac, Vlach and Roma communities in Serbia, through a comparative analysis of theoretical and empirical findings, scientific debates and critical views of political scientists, ethnologists, historians, linguists and demographers. The focus of the paper is numerous controversies related to their origin, language, religion, culture and customs - that is, all key determinants of ethno-national identity that cause different interpretations in academic, professional, political and wider social circles.
